  • Mazda concepts showcase hybrid power
  • Senku coupe could preview RX-7
  • MX-Crosssport on sale in US next year

Mazda Senku on show in Tokyo this month

The Mazda Senku is a four-seater coupe designed to be a sporty yet comfortable
and luxurious car. Named after the Japanese word for pioneer, the car is powered
by a 1.3-litre rotary petrol/electric hybrid engine.

It has perfect 50:50 front-rear weight distribution and low centre of gravity to
give it the sporty feel.

The concept is described as the future design direction for Mazda’s sports coupes.

Mazda is quick to explain that this purely a concept car, however, and that it has
no plans to put it into production. Still, there have been rumours that the new
RX-7 is in development, so this could be an early indication of the car’s shape.

Also on show will be the Mazda 5 RE, which again uses a 1.3-litre rotary engine,
but this time fuelled by hydrogen. More details are expected at the show, but Mazda
claims it offers efficiency with a rewarding drive.

Mazda will also show the MX-Crosssport. Despite labelling the car as a concept,
the blend of 4x4-cum-sports coupe is due to go on sale in North America in
2006. It is almost certain to make into European showrooms afterwards.
