A concept version of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe has been shown at the Frankfurt motor show.

The concept gives a strong indication of the looks of the next version of Mercedes' flagship coupe, which is due to go on sale in 2014 and will go head to head with the likes of the Bentley Continental GT. The model will take the place of the old CL coupe, with Mercedes opting to simplify things by moving to an S-Class saloon/Coupe offering.

The concept comes with the 449bhp 4663cc V8 Biturbo petrol engine that features in the S500 version of the S-Class saloon. Mercedes has not revealed any performance figures, but the Coupe should be able to at least match the saloon's 4.8sec 0-62mph time and 31.7mpg fuel economy.

The concept is recognisably a member of the S-Class family, albeit with several notable differences. The doors are frameless, and there are no pillars between the front and rear of the cabin. It also comes with full LED front and rear lights, a new evolution of Mercedes' diamond grille, and 21-inch alloy wheels.

The interior is much more futuristic. The upper section of the instrument panel appears to float in front of the dashboard, while the edges flow into the door panels to wrap around the cabin. It comes with two 30.7cm screens, as featured in the standard S-Class, while a touch-screen in the central console shows four world clocks.

The centre console is finished in a 'black diamond' metal that Mercedes says is highly scratch-resistant, while the door panels are made of milled aluminium.

The production version of the S-Class Coupe is expected to make its official debut at the Geneva motor show in 2014, before going on sale later next year.
