The new Mercedes SLK55 AMG will cost from £54,950, and is available to order now.

The SLK55 AMG is the most powerful version of the two-seater convertible yet. It uses a 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine that blasts the SLK from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and to a limited top speed of 155mph.

It comes with a cylinder management system, that shuts down two of the car’s eight cylinders when they're not required – during periods of motorway cruising, for example. The technology cuts emissions by 30% to 195g/km and improves average economy by the same margin to 33.6mpg, compared with the previous car. An engine stop-start system also helps efficiency.

Standard equipment for the SLK55 AMG includes a seven-speed automatic transmission, an AMG sports suspension set-up, 18-inch alloys, leather upholstery, high-performance brakes and a satellite-navigation system with digital radio.

There are two options packages available: the AMG Performance Package features revised suspension and brakes, and a locking rear differential for £4105, while the £2755 AMG Driver's Package ups the car's top speed to 186mph.

The first cars will hit showrooms by March.
