MG3 aims for sub-£10,000 price
MG will offer three trims, but the sub-£10,000 entry-level model will come with a very limited equipment roster.
However, the second and third trims levels will get Bluetooth, DAB radio, USB and aux-in connections, and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Other equipment to be offered includes automatic lights and wipers, air-conditioning, rear parking sensors, sports seats and daytime running lights.
The company's sales and marketing manager, Guy Jones, said that the core MG3 range will be in the £10,000 to £12,500 price bracket, as the company aims to take sales from cars such as the Skoda Fabia.
The MG3 will also be offered with a wide range of personalisation options – similar to those on the likes of the Fiat 500 and Vauxhall Adam.
There will be 10 colours at launch and a selection of roof decals and graphics, which should appeal to younger buyers. These will feature British-themed imagery and computer emoticons.
Buyers will also be able to add sporty styling features such as a spoiler and wider sills.
MG intends the MG3 to offer a sporty driving experience, but it will be launched with just one engine option – a 104bhp 1.5-litre petrol. Despite the sporting intentions, the 0-62mph time is expected to be in excess of 10.0 seconds.
Emissions and economy figures are yet to be confirmed, but the company says it is not trying to compete with eco engines such as Ford's Ecoboost range.
However, MG has confirmed that more engines will be offered later, including a more economical petrol and a performance-oriented version.
Despite disappointing sales for the MG6 saloon and hatchback, MG has high hopes for the MG3, expecting it will sell 'in the thousands' in 2014.
More information on pricing, trims and final specification will be revealed in early August.
