Your next new car may have a full service history, but there's a chance it could still have missed out on vital repair work.
In 2005 almost two million cars were recalled, however only 92% of those had their faults rectified – meaning 160,000 cars didn't have the necessary repair work carried out.
The main problem lies in quality of data and mistakes such as incorrect chassis numbers and addresses mean that thousands of owners might never receive notice.
The RAC Foundation told What Car?: 'It appears to be accepted that today's cars will have issues and this is a worry for motorists. Manufacturers could do much more to let people know about recalls.'
Carry out your checks
Make sure than any used car has had the recall work it needs. Visit the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency's website www.vosa.gov.uk to search for recalls. The manufacturer or your dealer should be able to tell you which recalls have been carried out.
