Mitsubishi could launch one of the most powerful compact 4x4s in the UK if reaction at the Geneva Motor Show to a new Outlander V6 is positive.
The 3.0-litre V6 produces 217bhp, so only the Land Rover Freelander's 230bhp 3.2-litre is able to outgun the Mitsubishi.
Mitsubishi says it will gauge reaction to the car at next month's show and could launch it after the initial three engines for the range have arrived.
From its launch in March, the Outlander will only be available with a 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel, but a 154bhp 2.2-litre diesel and 168bhp 2.4-litre petrol will be added around September.
There aren't any performance figures for the Outlander V6, but considering it is 100kg lighter than the Freelander, it's likely to have a similar 0-62mph time of around 8.5sec and a top speed of more than 120mph.
The concept version of the forthcoming Evo X, due early next year, will also be on show for the first time in Europe. The Prototype-X gives a very good idea of what the high-performance car will look like, and was recently unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show.
