Mitsubishi says its i city car is attracting new customers to the brand.
The initial batch of 300 cars sold out within 20 days when the car went on sale in June 2007, and a further 750 of the allocated 1500 cars for 2008 have already been ordered.
Mitsubishi's own research has shown that 83% of buyers hadn't owned a Mitsubishi before, with the car's compact size being listed as the most compelling reason for choosing it.
Sales have predominantly been in the south east of England, where owners are most likely to encounter London's Congestion Charge.
