Mixed results in new Euro NCAP tests - Kia Rio

23 November 2005
Overall occupant protection 4/5 stars
Front impact 69%
Side impact 89%
Child protection 69% 3/5 stars
Pedestrian 36% 2/4 stars

Although the driver’s-side footwell ruptured in frontal impact trials, the Rio performed well overall. Chest and upper leg loads on the driver were where the Rio did least well.

The Kia did even better in side-impact tests, with side and head airbags performing well. A small risk of chest injury was the only area which prevented the Rio from getting full marks.

A reasonable child-protection score was achieved with Britax Baby Safe and Duo Plus seats used.

The leading edge and rearmost section of the bonnet provided the least cushioning for pedestrians, so the supermini netted two out of a possible four stars for its efforts to protect vulnerable road users.
