This month in What Car? magazine

  •  Latest issue of What Car? magazine on sale
  •  What's new on
  •  Definitive verdicts you can't afford to miss

The January 2015 issue of What Car? is now available on newsagents' shelves.

The focus this month is on the Ford Focus, which takes on its main rivals - the new Nissan Pulsar, the Skoda Octavia and the Volkswagen Golf. These four represent a broad range of talents and are four of the main models we reckon you should be looking at if you are after a family car.

We're taking a look at the versions with small petrol engines, and there are three 1.2-litres in the line up, and a 1.0-litre in the Ford Focus. It's a close-run thing, but the winner is a worthy one.

Our triple test takes a look at cars that put the focus more on entertainment and looks, as we pitch the brand new Audi TT against its rivals in the form of the Peugeot RCZ R and the Seat Leon SC Cupra 280.

The previous TT was our Coupe of the Year six years on the trot, so to say hopes are high for the new one is a bit of an understatement. The more powerful but cheaper Seat Leon Cupra 280 and the stylish and entertaining RCZ R will be a real test, though.

The first of our twin tests sees two hybrids going up against each other, but these ones have an emphasis on the luxurious. The Mercedes C-Class and the Lexus IS300h are aiming to tempt company car drivers by offering super-low monthly tax bills.

Finally, one of the biggest new cars in this month's magazine is one of the smallest. The Vauxhall Corsa is up against one of the best superminis that money can buy, the VW Polo. The old Corsa sold well, but never really elicited much love, and this one will look to change that and continue its commercial success. We see whether it succeeds in this aim, and how close it gets to the current class best.

Elsewhere in the magazine, our Personal Shopper feature helps find a bigger family car for a couple who are about to have their third child and need more space. Our Helpdesk looks at a Skoda Octavia with a damp issue, and the Audi TT is under the used car spotlight.

On the website this month

On page 39 of this month's What Car? we tell you about all the great reviews, videos and features we have coming up on the website. They include:

Smart Fortwo first drive
We've been out to drive one of the smallest cars on sale today - the Smart Fortwo. We see whether the two-seater can lay claim to being the most appropriate car for our modern cities. Read our verdict here.

Mazda 2 first drive
The Mazda 2 faces some really stiff competition in the supermini class. We have had a chance to try a prototype version that is very close to the final production car to see how it is likely to get on.

Kia Soul EV
Kai is launching its first electric car in the UK, and is choosing to put batteries in its Soul hatchback, rather than launch a dedicated model. It's pricey, but proves likeable - see our verdict here.

We've previewed the likes of the Volvo XC90, and the Mercedes AMG GT on video - watch both videos and more on our YouTube channel.

Our cars
We run a varied fleet of cars, and we write about each one every week. Read about them here.
