Mitsubishi will get a more powerful 2.2-litre diesel for its forthcoming Outlander 4x4.
The 158bhp engine from Peugeot-Citroen will join the Volkswagen-sourced 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel that launches the range in March.
The French group is supplying Mitsubishi with the engine in exchange for the Outlander platform, which will underpin the Citroen C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 off-roaders, both of which are also due in mid-2007.
The companies signed the engine agreement today, and said further collaboration was possible in the future.
