Winner MPV
Vauxhall Zafira 1.6 Club AC
Year ’07/57 Price £5500
This is the Zafira’s fourth-straight year as class champion, and our judges were unanimous when it came to the decision – no other MPV comes close to the value it offers. It’s a mid-size seven-seater that’s usable and easy to live with, and a 1.6 Club AC model of this age costs only £5500 – there’s no catch.

What’s more, the flexible seating system adapts to almost every situation, allowing you to fold seats into place as required, or store them in the cabin floor to create a minivan. As if that wasn’t enough, you can slide the middle row back and forth to maximise legroom or boot space. The two extra seats in the back are best for children, but there’s still reasonable boot space with them in use.

The Zafira is decent to drive, it doesn’t roll too much around corners, and the ride smoothes out all but the worst bumps. Our pick is the 1.6-litre petrol engine, which is the smallest of the three petrol engines on offer. It will handle the school run, shopping trips and family jaunts without any hassle.

Judge's view
Chris Mobley,
manager, Blackhorse Car Sales

‘The Zafira is a spacious, highly versatile MPV that can’t fail to deliver, whatever you ask it to do. It’ll seat seven adults, but doesn’t feel like a bus on the road.’
If you’re planning to spend a lot of time on the motorway then you should consider one of the 1.9-litre turbodiesel models, but this will push up the price.

The 1.6 petrol does an official average of 39mpg, and CO2 emissions of 172g/km
means you’ll pay £180 a year in road tax. A low insurance rating of group 10 will also help keep premiums down.

Club AC trim comes with air-conditioning, remote central locking and heated door mirrors, ISOFIX child-seat mounts, curtain airbags that cover the first and second rows of seats, and a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

Ex short-term lease and ex-hire cars make the best-value Zafiras, and these are usually found at car supermarkets.
