Honda says a hot Mugen version of its CR-Z hybrid coupe could be built.
Honda announced earlier this month that Mugen was building a CR-Z concept car 'with Type-R performance', which will get its first showing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
Officially, the Mugen car is a concept car, but a Honda insider hinted that a production version could be built. She said: 'All production cars start out as concepts'.
The CR-Z Mugen will have improvements to both the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine and the Honda IMA system to boost power and torque.
While no performance figures for the concept car have been released, Mugen said in some situations average fuel economy could better the standard CR-Z production car.
The CR-Z Mugen is a joint project between Honda (UK) and Mugen Euro – a UK-based subsidiary of Honda's tuning partner Mugen.
Mugen Euro produced the Civic Type-R Mugen, an extreme, 237bhp version of Honda's popular hot hatch.
