Audi is introducing a new 1.8-litre turbo engine for the A3 hatch, finally replacing the hugely successful 1.8T that's been used in everything from the TT to the Skoda Octavia.
The new engine uses VW/Audi's FSI technology, which Audi says is more efficient, cleaner and more powerful than the unit it replaces.
With an output of 158bhp and 184lb ft of pull, it will initially be available in the A3 three-door and Sportback, with a standard six-speed gearbox or the option of the S-tronic dual-clutch system (formerly DSG). A three-door A3 S-tronic manages the 0-62mph sprint in 7.8sec.
The A3 1.8 TFSI goes on sale on in Europe in January. It is expected to cost around £18,000 when it goes on sale in the UK later in the year.
