The latest edition of the Highway Code has been launched, and it includes sections to help vulnerable drivers, such as those who have just passed their test.
The update, which is the first for eight years, also includes a new safety code for novice drivers in order to ease their introduction to the roads.
Advice includes: 'Never show off or try to compete with other drivers, particularly if they are driving badly.'
Jim Fitzpatrick, Road Safety Minister, said: 'Road safety is a responsibility we all share and everyone should have a copy of the Code to keep their knowledge up-to-date.
'However, we know that the first few months after passing your driving test can be a risky time. This is reflected in the latest Code, which offers practical safety advice and reminders of the rules new drivers must abide by.'
Other updates include vehicle emissions information, the law on smoking in company cars and the stopping powers of Highway Agency Traffic Officers.
The new Code is approximately 50% thicker than the one it replaces and includes 29 new rules as well as numerous rewritten ones.
