Mercedes-Benz will start to introduce a new E-Class family this summer, with safety, comfort, quality and efficiency as its cornerstones.

By the end of the year the line-up will include the saloon pictured here, an E-Class coupe (the CLK badge is being dropped, for now at least), an estate and a convertible.

The most important of the pillars underpinning the new E-Class is efficiency. Mercedes is taking the fight to BMW and its Efficient Dynamics fuel-saving, CO2-cutting measures with a 'Blue Efficiency' package.

Fuel consumption has been hacked by up to 23% compared with the current E-Class, and there are five new engines to help achieve this.
