The launch of the new Rover 45 and MG ZS has been delayed by a year until late 2006.
The small family cars were due to arrive in the spring last year. However, hold-ups with design and development partners have led to a series of delays, the latest of which pushes the cars back to the end of next year.
MG Rover is still negotiating a joint venture with Chinese car manufacturer Shanghai Automotive Industry Alliance (SAIC), and the new car would be produced in China as part of the deal. The models would also be built at MG Rover’s existing Longbridge plant
MG Rover is also redesigning the 25 and MG ZR and the 75 and MG ZT in an effort to improve the company’s flagging sales. Both cars are scheduled for launch in the first half of 2006.
At the start of this year, face-lifted versions of the 25, 45 and 75, and their MG siblings, were launched. Offering increased value for money, they are a stop-gap until the new cars are ready.
