Nissan will add a more powerful, but more efficient engine option to the Micra supermini range this summer.
The supercharged 1.2-litre unit has an extra 18bhp over the current 1.2 engine, but it is far leaner and greener.
Low CO2 emissions of just 95g/km mean the car is exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge, while average economy is 68.9mpg.
Top speed is 112mph, although no 0-62mph time has yet been quoted for the car, which will make its debut at the Geneva motor show in early March.
Prices will be announced closer to the car's arrival in showrooms this summer.
