New pick-ups from Mitsubishi and Toyota are on their way to showrooms, which both promise new levels of car-like comfort from a commercial vehicle.

The Mitsubishi L200 goes on sale on March 1, and has been redesigned to improve passenger comfort and introduce more car-like handling.

The vehicle is based on the Pajero 4x4 rally raid car and, despite still being a commercial vehicle, the L200 has a far smaller turning circle that the outgoing model. The new double-cab version has a smaller load bay allowing more space for rear passengers.

The pick-up is powered by one of two 2.5-litre diesel engines. One produces 136bhp and the other 160bhp. An automatic gearbox will also be available for the first time, alongside the manual 'box.

Prices and full specifications will be released closer to the car's on-sale date, but insiders say that the new double cab will carry over prices from the current vehicle, which starts at roughly £16,700.

The Toyota Hilux makes it to dealers before the L200, going on sale on October 1. This is bigger than the current model with more legroom and a larger load bay.

Refinements include air-con and remote central locking as standard, and a more car-like interior. Power comes from a revised 101bhp diesel engine, although the car is only available with a manual gearbox. Prices for the Hilux double cab start at £17,769.

VAT-registered owners will still be able to reclaim the 17.5% tax on the pick-ups thanks to their commercial vehicle status, while monthly company car tax will cost a nominal £9 for lower-rate taxpayers or £17 at the higher rate.
