Smart has confirmed that the next Fortwo will go on sale in 2014.
The face-lifted version of the current Fortwo was on display at the New York motor show, but an all-new model is due in around two years.
At the show, Smart vice-president Dr Annette Winkler told What Car? that the new Fortwo will have roughly the same dimensions as the current model. The styling is likely to be strongly influenced by the Forvision concept car that made its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.
The current car’ rear-wheel-drive, rear-engined layout will be retained and a new four-door, four-seater version – likely to be called Forfour – will be launched at the same time. Winkler confirmed that this will have the same ‘face’ as the Fortwo, but will have its own look from the windscreen back.
The Forfour will be around 3.5 metres long, making it a close match for the VW Up in size.
As part of an alliance between the Mercedes and Renault, the new model will also form the basis of the next Renault Twingo. This is also expected to be available in three- and five-door variants – unlike the three-door-only current car.
Winkler told us that although the Twingo will share most parts with the new Smart models under the skin, it will look very different, inside and out.
