This is the car Peugeot hopes will sell as well as the 206 CC - the new 207 CC.

Styled in-house and based on the latest 207 supermini, the 2+2-seater will have three engine options: two 1.6-litre petrols, producing 120bhp or 150bhp, or a 1.6-litre 110bhp turbodiesel.

All three engines are combined with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, but a four-speed automatic with sequential control is available with the 120bhp petrol

Compared with the 206CC the diesel is a little slower on its way from 0-62mph. The 120bhp petrol is just as quick as the outgoing 110bhp car, however, while the new 150bhp is a tiny bit faster than the 138bhp 2.0-litre it replaces. Fuel economy is also down on the diesel, but the two petrols are more economical than before.

There are no more manual release handles to tackle in the 207 CC, the hood operating entirely automatically. It takes 25 seconds to fold away into the boot.

The 207 CC features five airbags, air-conditioning and the option of leather seats and an integrated fragrance diffuser for the dashboard (pick from seven lovely scents).

Other standard features are an active roll-over protection system and sport seats that provide a lower driving position than the hatchback’s.

On sale in March 2007, the 207 CC is likely to be a bit more expensive than the 206 CC, which starts at £14,145.
