This is BMW's revised 7 Series, which is expected to go on sale in late 2008 or early 2009.

Caught by our photographer undergoing testing in southern France, it is clear that the car borrows heavily on the 6 Series' styling.

Sources say that BMW is eager to make the new car more understated than the current model, emphasising the elegance of the car with an unfussy design.

Inside, the car is expected to feature an updated version of BMW's iDrive, which controls the car's navigation and entertainment functions. The system has caused controversy since it was launched because many owners find it too complicated to use.

Unconfirmed rumours also suggest the car will have an eight-speed automatic gearbox in order to maximise fuel efficiency.
