Unfortunately I hurt my right leg a few weeks ago, and my doctor has said that I’m not allowed to drive until it has fully healed. So, because I need to be driven around everywhere, I’m getting to see the 5 GT from a different perspective.

For starters, it’s easy to get in and out of the car because of its large door openings, which are great if your movement has been compromised by injury, for example. The cabin is pretty spacious as well: there’s more than enough room for me to stretch my leg out in the front passenger footwell and, because the car is tall, I don’t hit the headlining with my head when I have the seat as high as it will go in order to keep my injured leg bent. The electric seat adjustment (£885 when new) makes moving the passenger seat to the ideal position simple, too, and the only thing I can really complain about is the jiggly ride.

The person who’s been behind the wheel of the 5 GT the most recently has been my wife, and she likes driving it. She loves the power that the 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine provides, and how smooth it is. However, she does find the car’s large size quite a worry; the issue is magnified when she’s in tight places such as a busy multi-storey car park.

She’s not the only one who’s had problems manoeuvring the BMW: I’ve scuffed the alloy wheels on more than one occasion. Having low-profile tyres on the
car doesn’t help, as any close encounter with a kerb normally ends with the wheels being grazed.

The 5 GT is due to have its first service soon and, alloys aside, there are just a couple of niggles I want to get looked at: whenever the car’s on full left-hand lock there’s a clicking sound from somewhere underneath, and there are a couple of rattles coming from somewhere in the cabin. It’s possible that one rattle is coming from the luggage partition in the boot, because the noise is at its worst when the rear seats and the flap are all the way forward, but it isn’t as bad when they’re all the way back.
