Colleague Euan Doig borrowed the Passat this week to head up to see relatives in his home town of Dundee.

Once he got there, both he and the car were pressed into action to help with his brother’s house move.

The Passat was loaded to the gunwales numerous times with lots of house paraphernalia, and never complained once.

However, Euan thought the seat-folding mechanism, in which you have to remove the headrest, raise the seat cushions and only then fold down the rear-seat backrest was ‘ridiculous’. He’s right; it’s unnecessarily laborious when in rival estates you need only pull one lever for the rear seats to fold down flat.

I borrowed the Passat Estate on Monday to do 150 miles after work. When I got home close to midnight, I knew I’d made the right choice.

The diesel engine was quiet and economical, and had lots of torque, so I didn’t have to work it hard.
Thankfully, the cabin was a fine place to while away the hours. The seats were comfortable, the soft mood lighting gave an aura of calm, and the dials were easy to read and the buttons easy to use. My son, George, who is six-feet tall, also had loads of lounging room in the back seats.
Best of all, the massive boot swallowed our items with ease.
