Mazda CX-5 review

I'm moving house this week. While a removals lorry took most of our stuff the CX-5 has been more than capable of carrying the odds and sods left over. It has one of the biggest load spaces in any of our cars on fleet and there is not much of a lip into the boot it is easy to pack too.

The CX-5 has a warning system that beeps to let you know you're approaching speed cameras. If you are listening to the radio, the volume is automatically turned down so you can hear the warning.

Trouble is, on my commute on the M25 there are loads of gantries with speed cameras and the warning goes off every 30 seconds or so. One colleague even thought the radio was broken it was happening so often.

Turning off devices that are supposed to keep you safe is not a particularly wise thing to do, but the beeps are driving me nuts and for the life of me I can't figure out how to switch them off. So Danny Wallace's breakfast show on XFM will continue to get interrupted by that annoying beep. Maybe I need to listen to house music, so the beep won't be so noticeable.

The CX-5 had a go at being a real SUV last week, with a trip to visit my parents in the countryside.

I stopped short of taking the Mazda down the worst of muddy tracks and restricted its rural duties to dog transportation.

I've never considered it as a typical high-riding SUV, but my parents' two whippets thought otherwise. Even though there's no lip at the boot entry point, they hesitated a lot longer than usual before jumping in – they're used to a much lower and smaller Mazda 2.

However, they eventually made the leap with ease, and were more than happy once they'd got the measure of their new, higher surroundings.

Mazda CX-5 review

I've hardly been in the CX-5 recently and that's a measure of its popularity. Following a week away on a family holiday in Wales, this week a colleague borrowed the car because he's considering a CX-5, Kia Sportage or Nissan Qashqai.

Stuart was complimentary about the Mazda – he liked the dynamics and the interior, although he found the sat-nav fiddly to use. Currently, he's leaning towards the Kia with its lower price and longer warranty. Maybe he needs another test drive?
