Land Rover has launched a pilot scheme to offset the carbon dioxide emissions of every vehicle it sells.
The scheme will be run as a 'delete option' – it will be part of the price of a new vehicle but you can choose not to pay it – and ranges from £85 to £165 depending on the model chosen.
Climate Care will manage the scheme and use the money to fund projects such as low-energy lighting in South Africa and providing renewable-energy cooking stoves in Indian schools.
The scheme will run until the end of 2008, by which time Land Rover hopes to have offset over two million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
What Car? became the first motoring magazine to offset its carbon dioxide emissions earlier this year. You can calculate your own carbon costs by clicking here.
