More than one in 10 drivers admit to driving a car which doesn’t have an MoT,
according to new research.

The survey, carried out by Green Flag, also revealed that the majority of
motorists whose cars didn’t have a MoT were unaware about what the test covered.

While the condition of the spare wheel is not part of the MoT, 80% of drivers
thought it was, and 40% assumed that the oil, water and screen wash levels
are checked, when in fact they are not.

One in five drivers believe that as long as the car has passed its test, it did not
need further maintenance for the rest of the year.

The purpose of the MoT test is to ensure that vehicles over three years old are
checked annually for key roadworthiness and environmental requirements. It is
not, however, a guarantee of the general mechanical condition of a vehicle, and
regular maintenance checks and servicing are still essential.
