After 23,000 miles behind the wheel of the XJ, I thought it was high time I had a go in the passenger seat. I installed my younger daughter at the helm and we set out to visit relatives in Newcastle.

The five-hour journey flew by for both of us. The fact it was FA Cup fifth-round day also helped. I was able to watch the football on the Jag’s TV while my daughter could see the sat-nav on the same screen. I listened to the commentary via the wireless headphones, which allowed me to drown out the R&B tunes she was listening to through her iPod.
