This is not a car that is short of gadgets, but my favourite one is a surprise choice. I’d never liked the idea of ‘big brother’ style driving assistance, until I tried Mazda’s Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM) system. It provides a visible alert in each door mirror, warning you that another vehicle is close behind in the lane next to you. If you flick the indicator when there’s a car in your blindspot, a warning beep sounds and the light in the door mirror flashes.

I must confess that RVM has prevented a few badly judged lane changes by me, and I don’t resent the intervention one little bit.
