I’m really enjoying driving the Yeti. Just like its cousin, the Skoda Octavia, it has responsive steering and tidy body control. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is smooth, too, although I sometimes have to work the gears to keep the turbo on boost. Yes, the Yeti is noisy on the motorway, but around town it’s neat and nimble.

Most important to me, though, is how it performs as toddler transport – and so far, so good.

My two-year-old son has a fine view out thanks to the raised rear seats. On weekends away there’s plenty of room in the boot for his three-wheeler buggy and a large holdall of clothes for the three of us – plus a fair bit more if you remove the parcel shelf.

However, it would be a lot easier to load him if the rear doors were taller and opened wider, or the rear seats went a bit farther back: as it is, the rather tight opening means I have to dangle him awkwardly ahead of me before heaving him back into his bulky Group 1 seat, which is no fun for my back. Let’s hope things are a bit easier with the Group 0 seat for my next child, who’ll be arriving very soon.

It’ll be interesting to see how the boot copes with the paraphernalia that comes with a baby – on top of my toddler’s considerable baggage.
