After some subtle buttering up, I borrowed group production editor Euan Doig’s Golf GTD for my recent week’s holiday. I’m very glad I did.

It was comfortable and relaxing to drive on the 200-mile Friday evening dash from Middlesex to south Devon, then compact enough to thread along the narrow lanes to Slapton Sands, where this Second World War tank was rescued from the sea.

The Golf’s boot easily took enough luggage for two, and there was plenty of cabin storage for drinks and sweets. A gentle right foot meant the Golf also did 626 miles on a tank, at an average of 51.0mpg.
