Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI 170 GTD 3dr Mileage 9000
The challenge was set. Colleague Barnaby Jones had managed to squeeze 588 miles out of one 55-litre tank of diesel in his Mazda 3. I reckoned the Golf should be able to do better out of its identically sized tank, because at that point it was sitting outside with a quarter of the tank remaining, and I’d already done 510 miles. That night I hit 566.8 miles before I was finally forced to stop for fuel. Damn. One 54.5-litre refill later (Yikes! The range gauge had been reading 0 for quite some time) the real economy drive began. It ended 600.7 miles later. VW 1, Mazda 0. Beat that, Jones!
