Oxfordshire has switched its speed cameras back on just eight months after shutting them down.

The county had originally shelved the cameras in August after funding for its road safety partnership was slashed by £600,000.

However, the council has decided to perform the u-turn and reactivate its 70+ fixed cameras and 89 mobile units after a slight increase in road-related injuries.

The cameras were switched back on at 9am this morning.

Supt Rob Povey from Oxfordshire police said: 'We think this is important because we know that speed kills and speed is dangerous.

'We have shown in Oxfordshire that speed has increased through monitoring limits and we have noticed an increase in fatalities and the number of people seriously injured in 2010.'
