What Car? says
Don't think that running a wreck is the only option for those living on a student loan. There are plenty of great-value superminis on the market that will prove to be safer and cheaper to run in the long term.

Peugeot 107
Best Buy: 1.0 Urban 3dr, '06/06, 32,000 miles, from £3800
Insurance group: 1
Average economy: 61.4mpg
Road tax: £20
Euro NCAP rating: 4 stars (tested as Citroën C1)
Top of the class for cut-price motoring, the Peugeot is frugal, cheap to insure and to tax. It's almost identical to the Citroën C1 and Toyota Aygo, but is slightly better value.

Ford Fiesta
Best buy: 1.25i Style 3dr, '07/57, 40,000 miles, from £3700
Insurance group: 3
Average economy: 45.6mpg
Road tax: £110
Euro NCAP rating: 4 stars
The Fiesta easily makes the grade as a student's car. It's easy to live with and cheap to maintain, and it also comes with a CD player and anti-lock brakes as standard.

Vauxhall Corsa
Best buy: 1.0 Life 3dr, '07/07, 20,000 miles, from £5000
Insurance group: 1
Average economy: 50.4mpg
Road tax: £110
Euro NCAP rating: 5 stars
The Corsa is very safe, refined and well appointed. It sits in the lowest insurance band and, because it's the newest car here, it's still covered under warranty.

Nissan Micra
Best buy: 1.2 S 3dr, '06/06, 35,000 miles, from £3600
Insurance group: 2
Average economy: 47.9mpg
Road tax: £125
Euro NCAP rating: 4 stars
Cute styling makes the Micra stand out, but it's also safe because it has anti-lock brakes and side airbags. The three-door model will limit practicality, but the back seats slide to maximise either boot space or rear legroom.
