Peugeot is planning an Audi Allroad-style four-wheel-drive version of its 508 SW estate.
The new model is expected to go on sale in spring 2012 and will use the same diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain as the 3008 Hybrid4. It’s expected to get a raised ride height and extra body cladding for a tougher, 4x4-style image, as well as additional under-body protection.
The Hybrid4 system has a 163bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine that powers the front wheels, while a 37bhp electric motor drives the rear wheels. In the 3008, the system manages an average of 74.4mpg with CO2 emissions of 99g/km.
As well as 'Automatic' and 'Sport' modes, there’s the option of a zero emissions setting that allows the car to use electric power only at low speeds, under certain conditions. There’s also a four-wheel-drive mode that maximises the amount of time the two power sources work together, to provide maximum traction in slippery conditions.
A Hybrid4 version of the saloon is also expected, but it’s not yet clear whether there’ll also be a Hybrid4 SW without the 4x4-style makeover.
An on-sale date and prices have yet to be confirmed, but the 508 Hybrid4 is unlikely to undercut the 3008 Hybrid4, which starts at £26,600.
