Peugeot trades trees for CO2

Wednesday, April 05, 2006

Peugeot has finished planting two million trees to offset the carbon dioxide emissions of its cars.

The company started planting the trees in Brazil in 1999 and says the project has so far helped to offset 55,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Over the course of the 40-year project, Peugeot says the forest will have offset 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Peugeot also says it is working to reduce emissions at source, with more efficient injection systems for its diesel engines and an entirely new range of petrol engines for the 207 later this year.

Its efforts are catalogued in whatcar.com's series of environmental features. Out of 33 manufacturers in our fuel economy and emissions halls of fame and shame, Peugeot was in 8th position.

What Car? is also working to offset the carbon dioxide emissions generated in the production of the magazine and website. We've teamed up with Climate Care to counter our carbon dioxide output with a range of programmes, such as fitting energy-efficient bulbs in Kazakhstan, providing efficient cooking stoves in Bangladesh or replanting forests in Uganda.
