The Chancellor's Pre-Budget Report (PBR) is being revealed now, so how much more is it going to cost to keep your car on the road?
The PBR is an assessment of the state of the economy and a chance for Alistair Darling to set out the direction of Government policy in the lead up to the next full Budget statement in April.
Expect the following motoring-related issues to figure in the PBR
Fuel duty: Duty increases from the previous PBR equal 5.84p per litre. It is feared that the Chancellor could impose an immediate 1p a litre increase in fuel duty rather than wait for the scheduled rise in April – which would be politically sensitive coming so close to the General Election in May.
The 2.5% increase in VAT from January 1 will increase fuel duty further.
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED): The Chancellor is expected to announce more information on changes to VED rates. The 13 different charging bands will be further separated to strengthen the environmental impact of the tax – inevitably meaning higher bills for many hard-pressed motorists.
