Volkswagen has announced prices for its new Golf GTD model.

Cheapest is the three-door version with a manual gearbox, priced at £21,850.

There's a £585 premium for the five-door, while the six-speed DSG semi-automatic gearbox is £1305.

Power comes from a 168bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine that gives an official 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 138mph.

Average fuel consumption of 53.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km help keep running costs down.

Although it's £560 cheaper than the 207bhp petrol-powered Golf GTI, the GTD shares much of its visual appeal. There's the same chunky front bumper, although the GTD has chrome – rather than red – front grille inserts.

The GTD also has bespoke 17-inch 'Seattle black' alloy wheels.

Inside, the GTD mimics the GTI with its flat-bottomed steering wheel and aluminium pedals. It also has sporty seats trimmed in tartan fabric. Look closely, however, and you'll see that the GTD has a unique grey, white and black check, unlike the GTI's red, white and black design.

VW showrooms are taking orders for the GTD now, although deliveries won't start until the end of June.
