There are small price rises for most models, but there's more standard equipment than before.

The model line-up has expanded to include new Sport, Modern and Luxury trims, which BMW says cater for an increasing number of customers who want to individualise their car.

ES trim is available only for 316d models and includes:

• Alloy wheels
• Climate control
• Bluetooth
• USB input
• Leather-trimmed steering wheel

SE trim has a 850 premium and adds:

• Reversing sensors
• Two-zone climate control
• Automatic headlights and wipers

Sport and Luxury models have a further 1000 premium and add:

Sport
• Black high-gloss air intakes
• Black chrome exhaust tailpipe trim
• Sports seats
• Extended lighting pack

Modern
• Matt chrome air intakes
• Different front bumper design
• Switchable interior lighting colours
• Extended lighting pack
• Part-leather upholstery

Luxury trim is available on all but the 316d and 320d Efficient Dynamics. It includes:

• Bright chrome air intakes
• Extra chrome interior trim
• Full leather upholstery
• 18-inch alloys

M Sport models have:
• Lowered and stiffened suspension
• 18-inch alloys
• Sports seats with leather trim
• Shortened gearshift

A number of new high-tech options are available across the range. These include:

• Park Assist, which allows the car to park itself
• Reversing Assist camera with surround-view cameras
• 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat
• Head-up display
