Fiat is getting ready to size up the supermini sector with its new Grande Punto.

Arriving in the UK early next year, the big supermini is 200mm longer than the existing car from tip to tail, and outstretches rivals such as the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 206.

Although width and height haven't experienced quite such a dramatic growth spurt, Fiat promises bags of room inside the new three- and five-door car.

From launch, Fiat hopes to have five engines to offer buyers. Petrol engines should include a 65bhp 1.2-litre and a new 77bhp 1.4-litre, while diesel options are two 1.3-litres developing 75bhp or 90bhp, and a 1.9-litre producing 120bhp.

More details on performance, specification and pricing will be announced later in the year, but we'd expect the new Grande Punto range to start from around £8000 to £8500.

It's possible that a basic, cheap version of the existing Punto will continue to be sold in the UK alongside the new model for some time.
