Land Rover is still deciding whether to produce a soft-top version of the Range Rover Evoque.

Company boss John Edwards told What Car? that he is ‘keen’ on the idea of putting the Evoque Convertible into production but admitted he still hasn’t given the green light to the project. A decision is likely to be made soon after assessing its sales potential, however.

A concept version was first shown at the Geneva motor show in 2012 to garner opinion on the car, which would have no direct rival. Edwards admitted a production Cabrio would help keep the Evoque line-up fresh and continue to attract new customers to Land Rover.

Like the concept car, the production version would be based on the three-door Coupe model, and have a fabric roof rather than a folding metal hood. Previously, Land Rover engineers have told What Car? that no major structural changes would be needed to compensate for not using a fixed roof.

Senior company sources revealed that if the Cabrio was produced it could go on sale as soon as 2015, possibly to coincide with other revisions to the entire Evoque range.
