BMW X1
What is it? The smallest member of BMW’s 'X' family. It's close in size – if not price - to the Evoque and is offered with a range of three 2.0-litre diesel engines. It's available with front- or four-wheel drive.

BMW X3
What is it? The middle sibling in BMW’s 'X' family. It's bigger than an Evoque and more of a family car than the X1. Available with two trims and two engines, all with four-wheel drive.

Mini Countryman
What is it? The Countryman is Mini’s largest model yet. It comes with a choice of four- or five-seat layouts and a range of personalisation options. Lots of engines and trims to choose from, and the choice of front- or four-wheel drive.

Volkswagen Tiguan
What is it? The Tiguan is Volkswagen’ recently face-lifted compact SUV, with updated styling and more efficient engines. As before, it’s a sound ownership prospect and all versions are good to drive. Escape trim adds a more rugged front bumper and extra off-road kit.

For:

Excellent ride and handling

Porsche Cajun
A baby brother for the Cayenne. Porsche has confirmed that the Cajun will be built, but nothing beyond that. It’s likely to be based on the Audi Q5, with prices starting at around £40,000 and a launch date in early 2013.
