The new Mercedes S-Class will make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.
Mercedes’ flagship saloon goes on sale in the UK next spring. It is taller, wider and longer than its predecessor, and will eventually be available with a choice of four engines, three of which are new.
From launch, there will be two petrol engines available – a 388bhp V8 unit and a 272bhp V6. Later in 2006, the line-up will be joined by a new 235bhp diesel engine and a range-topping 517bhp V12, which can launch the car to 62mph in 4.6sec.
Inside, the Mercedes uses a control system similar to BMW’s iDrive and Audi’s MMI. The new Comand – Mercedes' spelling, not ours – system controls functions such as the in-car phone, CD and DVD changers, satellite-navigation and climate control through a single knob located on the central console.
S-Class prices will not be released until later this year.
