On the highest trim levels, safety is catered for by seven airbags, including a knee airbag, which are triggered by a new sensor that detects a crash earlier than before.

There are also whiplash-reducing head restraints, an improved stability control system and daytime running lights.

Cars fitted with side airbags will also feature a warning system that tells the driver if rear seat passengers aren't wearing a seatbelt.

Optional equipment includes ACC Automatic Distance Control, which maintains a constant distance to the car ahead, and DCC Adaptive Chassis Control, which allows you to select comfort, normal or sport settings and adjust the dampers accordingly.

Park Assist, which automatically parallel parks the car and is already available on the Tiguan, is also an option, as are rear parking cameras.
