Verdict A competent unit and very well specified.

For £190, you get Bluetooth connectivity, a traffic-monitoring facility, voice control, an MP3 and video player, a photo viewer, and full maps of Western Europe. The only thing you don't get is a big screen.

As a navigator, the GoPal wasn't up there with the best, but we found it more than capable of getting us from A to B with minimum hassle.

The maps were easy to follow, but prone to falling behind the car's position from time to time.

The spoken instructions were mainly excellent, but the 'text-to-speech' function (which is designed to pronounce roads names) literally talked nonsense for much of the time.

The unit felt solid and well made with a smart, shiny finish. The bulky cradle design was shared with several of the units on test (including the Mio C220 in the Under £150 category) and it did a good job of keeping the Medion still, but did seem overkill for such a small unit.
