Magellan Maestro 4010
Best Price £179.72 (Handtec.co.uk)
For Well priced and easy to use.
Against Slow route calculation and jerky maps.
Verdict The big screen doesn't make up for hard-to-follow, jumpy maps.
The 4010 was a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, it's keenly priced at £180, the bright 4.3-inch screen proved resistant to glare and the unit was blessed with clear, well designed menus.
On the other, the maps were jerky and difficult to follow, and the cradle didn't hold the Magellan still enough.
The spoken instructions were easy to follow, but the built-in speaker was tinny and distorted when the volume was turned up.
We also found the Magellan slower at calculating routes than most of the units here.
The 4010 comes with Bluetooth connectivity, but misses out on European maps, traffic monitoring and voice control.
That's understandable, though, as it's the cheapest unit in the budget and some of your cash will have gone towards the large screen.
Magellan will soon be replacing the 4010 with the 4200, and if some of current unit's shortcomings are seen to, it should do better next time around.
