TomTom Go 720

Best Price £269.88 (Halfords.com)
For Pretty much everything.
Against We're splitting hairs, but the cradle is better on the TomTom One.
Verdict As good as it gets in almost every area.

It's hard to imagine how the One (see TomTom One 3rd edition in the under £150 category) could be improved to make it worth twice the price - but we think the designers at TomTom have managed it.

The bright 4.3-inch screen was a good start, and the 720 looked more interesting than the One. It felt beautifully made, too, and we found the map design, speed and fluency moving across the screen second to none.

You get plenty of features, too, such as voice-operated controls, European maps and Bluetooth connectivity. An FM transmitter allows you to play the navigation commands through your car stereo speakers.

If you want traffic monitoring, the price rises to around £299.

We didn't like the cradle as much as the One's, because it tended to unclip from the back of the sat-nav unit when sticking it to the screen, but it was still much better than most.

We were directed down a one-way street, which could have been nasty, but thanks to TomTom's clever map-correction system (which allows users to share mapping errors with each another), that particular blunder shouldn't happen again.
