For Lots of features and a big screen.
Against Screen doesn't handle glare well, and the unit is bulky.
Verdict Good in most areas, but not the best in any.

The first thing that strikes you about the RAC 220 is its size - it's enormous.

That's fine if you don't need a unit that will fit in your pocket, but not so great if you plan on using your sat-nav outside the car.

We found the huge five-inch screen great in overcast conditions and at night, but it didn't cope at all well with glare.

In fact, it was probably the least visible of all the units on test in bright sunshine.

The cradle was rather large, but it needed to be to support the RAC's bulk. It locked in position well and prevented the 220 from vibrating on bumpy roads.

Other units here were more user-friendly, but the RAC was quick through the menus and comes packed full of features.

Traffic monitoring, Bluetooth connectivity, European maps and an MP3 player come as standard, and there's even an 'AV IN' connector if your passenger fancies watching a movie on the move.
