16 November 2007
TomTom ONE 3rd Edition

Best Price £133.30 (Halfords.com)
For Fluent, easy-to-follow maps, simple menus and clear spoken instructions.
Against Dull looks.
Verdict Simple, and all the better for it.

This beats everything else in this price range thanks to maps that move across the screen fluently and better cradle design.

The matt grey case isn't pretty, but the plastic feels high quality and the smooth design makes it ideal for carrying around in your pocket.

The spoken directions were clear during testing and we weren't overloaded with unnecessary instructions.

We rarely needed more detail, and were thankful for long periods of peace and quiet - apart for the occasional jingle when it warned of a nearby safety camera.

A quick glance at the basic, easy-to-read maps told us how far it would be before we'd need to change direction.

The TomTom did a great job of keeping pace with the car, and that made following the excellent on-screen prompts in built-up areas easy.

The cradle simply plugged onto the windscreen and pulled off. There was no fiddling with knobs and switches to adjust the angle, and the connection slotted nicely into the back of the unit.
