For Easy to use, good in sunlight and the perfect size for your pocket
Against Maps are slow, jerky, and difficult to follow
Verdict Good in most areas - but not the most important

The RoadMate 1200 is a new unit from Magellan.

We found it easy to use, thanks to a simple menu system that's surprisingly quick.

The RoadMate doesn't look particularly interesting, but it was the smallest of the 30 sat-navs we tested and weighed just 140g.

That made it ideal for slipping into our pocket when we'd parked up and needed to do the final stretch of our journey on foot.

When it comes to navigation, though, the Magellan wasn't much cop. The maps' movement across the screen was jerky and much poorer than the competition.

The poorly designed layout also made it difficult to follow a route. Thankfully, the spoken instructions were much better.

The RoadMate's screen was one of the most visible in bright sunshine and the cradle was robust, although it could have done with being a little more compact.
