Jaguar faced a challenge when designing the new XK. There was plenty of scope to improve the car’s interior packaging and dynamics, but how could it better its predecessor’s sumptuous looks?

The answer was to retain a similar overall shape, but add more modern, muscular details. Few would argue the result is anything but stunning, and Jaguar says that bold details, such as the sculpted sides and the vertical vent in the front wings, indicate a more adventurous look for future Jags.

The interior is less dramatic, but it’s well ordered – a huge improvement over the old car’s cramped, messy cabin. Although there's extra head- and legroom up front, space is still strictly limited on the two rear seats.

As before, there’s the option of a convertible model, but both coupe and cabrio are the same under the skin. Initially, a version of the XJ saloon’s 4.2-litre V8 petrol engine – linked to a six-speed automatic gearbox – will be the only engine option, and the 300bhp unit is likely to provide strong performance and excellent refinement.

Later, supercharged XKR versions with 400bhp will top the range, while a more affordable 3.5-litre V8 is also a possibility.

With a stiffer body and XJ-derived steering and suspension systems, the new XK promises to have a drive to match its looks. We expect more precise handling than the current model, but as this is a Jaguar, it’ll also be expected to be a comfortable long-distance cruiser.
